On Tuesday night, the Waco City Council approved the initial cost for the purchase of body cameras for the police department.

The group looked at seven options seriously but ultimately chose to use Axon, a company widely known for police body cameras.

The initial cost will be $635,570 with an annual cost of just under 300,000.

Axon will replace the cameras every 2.5 years. The cameras will start recording when tasers are pulled by officers.

There will be 270 cameras for officers and five to seven cameras for additional staff.

The department hopes to have the cameras implemented by this August. Officers will go through training before they use the cameras.
