School board votes to fire teacher for inappropriate comments

The Marlin ISD school board voted 3-0 to terminate the contract of one if its teachers Tuesday night.

Superintendent Dr. Michael Seabolt said a high school teacher made a comment before the Algebra I STARR test that "there are only a couple smart enough to pass it anyway." Seabolt said the comment was made by Claude Kelley, in front of students and another teacher.

Superintendent Seabolt recommended the district fire Kelley after those comments. He said firing is in the best interest of the school district.

“I mean you already have kids that are facing a lot of adversity in their lives in their personal lives. And so to make it worse at school is not something we can tolerate any of in Marlin,” Seabolt said.

Kelley has been with the school district for about five years.

Seabolt said Kelley’s position was going to be eliminated anyway before the comments were made. Kelley will be on paid leave until his contract expires.

Kelley was not at the meeting Tuesday night.
