The Waco Police Department said one person was taken to the hospital after a shooting in Waco, Sunday afternoon.

Officers were called out to the intersection of Kentucky Ave. and 5th St. around 5 p.m.

Police said when they arrived at the scene they found a victim on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso.

Police said the victim was alert and talking to officers before he was rushed to Baylor Scott and White-Hillcrest for surgery. He is now in stable condition.

"There was a fight in the street and the victim came to intervene in the fight and there were weapons involved and the victim ended up getting shot," said Cmdr. Steve Mosley with the Waco Police Department.

Cmdr. Mosley said the victim jumped in to help his brother who was involved in the fight with the suspect. He also said they believe the fight was a form of retaliation for something that happened weeks ago.

Police said they do have a description of the suspect and his vehicle but they are not releasing that information to the public at this time.

This is an ongoing investigation and police are actively searching for the suspect.

If you have any information on this crime, you are asked to contact police.
