The Temple Fire Department is training specifically to protect their own.

"Mayday, mayday, mayday."

According to the U.S. Fire Administration in 2016, 89 firefighters died in the line of duty.

To prevent a tragedy from happening, if a firefighter becomes distressed and needs help, he or she will call out mayday.

They will provide as much information as they can as to what has happened, where they are and what they need, and a rapid intervention team, or rescue team, will go in after them.

"A firefighter could get trapped, they could become disoriented, they could run out of air or be low on air... something has happened, so that RIT team is dedicated specifically to affect rescues for that firefighter and nothing else," Thomas Pechal with Temple Fire & Rescue said.

All Temple firefighters went through several mayday scenarios for the training.
