A Central Texas paramedic who was critically injured after a drunk driver hit him is getting help from the community.

Rory Barros had 16 surgeries in four months, one of which was a leg amputation.

Barros needs a prosthetic leg in order to get back to work. On Sunday, friends and family held a benefit fundraiser to help Barros with the cost.

"He needs help and he helps people for a living and we just wanted to do something nice for him to help him in his time of need," Janine Nice, one of the organizers, said.

The benefit at Lakeside Tavern in Waco runs from noon to 9 p.m. It features several live bands, barbecue and a silent auction.
