China Spring head coach Mark Bell to retire

CHINA SPRING, TX (KXXV) -

After 21 seasons, China Spring head football coach and athletics director Mark Bell announced he is hanging up his whistle.

Bell says his son, Brian (current China Spring offensive coordinator) will take over his duties as head coach while Mark will continue to handle the AD duties.

Perhaps there was no better timing considering Bell's longtime rival Willie Williams of La Vega also stepped down after last season. The two battled it out for the better part of two decades, but consider each other friends.

Bell and Williams are joined by Copperas Cove's Jack Welch who resigned from Copperas Cove yesterday after manning their program since 1994.

Bell led China Spring to more than 170 wins during his tenure including 18 playoff berths and a State Championship appearance in 2007.
