Community remembers longtime firefighter following fatal truck accident

NEW LONDON, TX (KLTV) -

An East Texas community is remembering a longtime volunteer firefighter.

Flags are at half-staff at the New London city hall, a tribute to longtime volunteer firefighter and former mayor, 86-year-old M.V. Hudson.

"He was about helping people," longtime friend John Hendon says.

John Hendon started his first day of fire training with Hudson nearly 5 decades ago. He remembers the first call with Hudson when they rode a 1941 fire truck.

"We had gone through training together, fire training, firefighting, the whole ball of wax," Hendon says.

New London Fire Chief Curtis Riley says the station's water truck flipped over when the wheels slid off the highway; and both Hudson and the driver had to be rescued from the vehicle.

"The fire department is going to feel his loss and the community in general, not only the fire department and police department, but we all are," New London Police Captain Jason Parker says.

"It’s just one of those things you have to deal with and sometimes, it’s not easy," Hendon says.

As he fights back tears, Hendon along with many more of Hudson’s friends and colleagues, say M.V. Hudson will be truly missed.

M.V. Hudson's memorial service is scheduled for Thursday night at Crawford A. Crim funeral home in Henderson.
The service starts at 7:00 p.m.

New London volunteer fire department will serve as honorary pallbearers.
