LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

A strong cold front is tracking across the South Plains late Tuesday.

The threat of winter weather returns late Tuesday night and will continue through Thursday over the South Plains.

It will begin with arctic air moving into the region Tuesday evening on winds from the north at 15-25 mph through midnight Tuesday.

Models are showing light wintry precipitation developing across the area after midnight Tuesday.  The risk for freezing rain, sleet and light snow will increase between 1:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.

Temps will fall to the mid-20s by Wednesday morning with a slight chance of light wintry precipitation; a combination of rain, sleet, freezing rain and snow.  The chance of the wintry mix will continue through the midday hours Wednesday.

This first band of precipitation pushes to the east by Wednesday afternoon.  Another disturbance crosses the area late Wednesday night bringing another risk for freezing rain and freezing drizzle early Thursday morning.

High temperatures may occur early Wednesday with highs around 30 degrees.  Temperatures fall into the middle 20's where they may remain throughout the day.  Gusty north winds continue.

Low temperatures hold in the 20's Wednesday night through Thursday morning with additional ice accumulations possible overnight.

During the day Thursday, the wintry mix will move out of the area and temps will warm slightly.

Before this happens, cold weather continues with the possibility of freezing rain/drizzle and/or sleet.

Ice and hazardous travel conditions are possible.

There is a slight chance of icy areas during Daybreak Today on Wednesday and again Thursday morning.
