The Humane Society of Central Texas said they are holding a free adoption day, on Tuesday for all dogs that have been neutered or spayed.

Lots of schools and businesses were closed Tuesday over fears of wintry weather, but the Humane Society of Central Texas stayed open so potential adopters could stop by.

Don Bland, executive director of the Humane Society of Central Texas, said there are just seven open kennels left at the shelter.

To avoid filling up, the staff is offering the free adoptions.

The parking lot was packed for a good portion of the day and a handful of dogs have already found their forever home.

"We knew that everybody was off today because of all the cancellations so we wanted to let everybody know that we're still here and open," said Bland. "Dogs are still needing to find homes and we've had good traffic for a day like today that's so blustery."

You don't have to worry about the animals getting cold either. Their kennels are climate controlled and every dog or cat has its own blanket.

If you're interested in adopting a dog for free, the shelter will be open until 6 p.m. on Jan. 16. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
