The Limestone Animal Rescue Adoption Center will offer free adoptions for pets starting this weekend.

LARAS House is hosting its first Home of the Holidays Clear the Shelter Day event. It will take place on Saturday from 10-3 p.m.

Free adoptions will be available from Dec. 23rd through Jan. 1, 2018. The event is made possible through sponsors.

Currently, the shelter has 116 dogs and 85 cats on campus and foster care available for adoption.

"We can save a lot more animals when we adopt a lot more animals so we can take in animals from our waiting list that are looking to come into the shelter," Home for the Holidays event chair and volunteer Liz Kadin said.

According to Kadin, the idea for the event came from seeing the success of the National Clear the Shelter Day in August. Back then, 21 dogs and 43 cats were adopted.

In addition, she said the community asked for another event that offered free adoptions.

Ron Austin who adopted two dogs with his wife five months ago from the no-kill shelter said he hopes others do the same.

"It's amazing how you can connect with them and enjoy them."

According to Austin, before he adopted one of his dogs, a car had ran her over twice.

When she healed, she was sent to the shelter where Austin first met her.

"It was love at first sight. I had to get her," Austin said. "Physically for myself, it has helped me reduce my blood pressure and have a better life for myself."

If you are interested in adopting a pet, you can visit the shelter located at 1517 Hwy 171 in Mexia.
