Son of ex-Democratic governor enters Texas governor's race

HOUSTON (AP) - Andrew White, son of the late Democratic Texas Gov. Mark White, has launched his longshot bid to unseat Republican Gov. Greg Abbott next year.

White, an investor who isn't well known in Texas, held a rally Thursday in his hometown of Houston, promising to campaign as a conservative Democrat.

He is just the second major Democrat to enter a gubernatorial primary that most of the party's rising Texas stars opted to bypass. White joins former Dallas County Sherriff Lupe Valdez, the state's first Hispanic, female sheriff.

A Democrat hasn't won Texas statewide office since 1994, which is the longest losing streak in the nation. The party hasn't captured the governorship since Ann Richards won in 1990.

White's dad, who died in August, was governor from 1983 to 1987, when Texas was still solidly Democratic controlled.
