Texas shooting suspect faced family violence assault charge

SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) - Affidavits show a Texas man suspected of fatally shooting an officer serving a warrant for his arrest faced a family violence assault charge relating to his wife and mother-in-law.

San Marcos police have issued an arrest warrant for 51-year-old Stewart Thomas Mettz. He is suspected of shooting 58-year-old Officer Kenneth Copeland Monday, though police haven't filed charges against him in connection to the death. Mettz was also shot and remains in an Austin hospital.

The Austin American-Statesman reports that arrest warrant affidavits were filed in Hays County on Monday. The affidavits show Mettz's wife and mother-in-law told police on Nov. 26 that he'd assaulted them. The women also allege Mettz threatened them if they filed charges against him.
