Top retweets of 2017 include 3 from Obama

(RNN) - In a list of the nine most retweeted tweets of 2017 compiled by Twitter, three tweets by former President Barack Obama made the cut.

The list included responses to historic floods after Hurricane Harvey, an athlete's pushback on President Donald Trump, a terror attack and a quest for free food.

No. 9: The Detroit Lions' Sam Martin asked for retweets of a video he posted, and for every one, he pledged to donate 6 pounds of dog food to the Houston area in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, which devastated the area in August. It received 623,000 retweets and 214,000 likes.

No. 8: At the end of his term, the inauguration day of Donald Trump, President Obama tweeted his thoughts: "It's been the honor of my life to serve you. You made me a better leader and better man."

No. 7: LeBron James responded Sept. 23 to President Donald Trump uninviting his rival Stephen Curry after Curry declined to attend a White House reception for the champion Golden State Warriors. Calling the president "u bum," James' jab was retweeted 660,000 times and liked 1.5 million times.

No. 6: Rock band Linkin Park tweeted a photograph of lead singer Chester Pennington July 20 after the singer took his own life. It received 787,000 retweets and 1.5 million likes.

No. 5:  President Obama tweeted his thanks to the nation as the end of his presidency neared: "I'm asking you to believe - not in my ability to create change, but in yours." It received 870,000 retweets and more than 1.8 million likes.

No. 4: Ariana Grande responded on Twitter to a terror attack during her concert in Manchester, England, that killed 22 and injured about 120 others on May 22. The tweet drew more than 1.12 million retweets and nearly 2.7 million likes.

No. 3: In response to the Houston-area flooding in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, Penn State Intrafraternity Council pledged 15 cents to hurricane recovery for every retweet. The tweet garnered nearly 1.17 million retweets and 226,000 likes.

No. 2: Obama tweeted a Nelson Mandela quote decrying racism. "No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion, " which was retweeted 1.7 million times and liked 4.6 million times.

The tweet was created in response to the violence in Charlottesville, VA, after rally of white nationalists. Heather Heyer died and many others were injured when someone purposefully drove into a group of counterprotesters participating in a peaceful march.

No. 1: Hungry for chicken nuggets, Carter Wilkerson asked for Twitter's help to get some free from Wendy's, becoming the retweet champion. The tweet has 3.6 million retweets and 986,000 likes.
