Funeral arrangements set for DPS trooper who was struck by vehicle

Funeral arrangements for the DPS trooper that died when he was struck by a vehicle while conducting a traffic stop have been released. 

The funeral for Trooper Thomas Nipper will be held at the Temple Bible Church on Friday, Nov. 10 at 1:00 p.m.

A memorial visitation service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Dossman Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Friday, Nov. 10 at1 p.m. at the Temple Bible Church. A graveside service will follow at the North Belton Cemetery.

Nipper was born in Watham, Massachusetts and graduated from Copperas Cove High School in 1973. He earned an associate's degree in criminal justice from Central Texas College. 

He began serving the community as a police officer in Nolanville. Nipper also served at Hereford, Coryell County Sheriff Department, the Belton Police Department and Gainesville Police Department. He graduated from the DPS Academy in 1982. 

In total, Nipper put in 43 years of service and earned numerous awards including the Field Major's award for going beyond the call of duty to find and save an abducted child. 

Nipper is survived by his wife Tammy, whom he met in 1978 when she was working as a dispatcher in Gatesville, and their three children. 

“For more than 34 years, Trooper Thomas Nipper answered the noble call to serve and protect his fellow Texans, bravely facing the daily dangers of his job,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “Even after retiring, he returned to work and continued his Highway Patrol duties. We are extremely humbled by and proud of his unwavering dedication to the department and the people of Texas. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. He and his family will always be a part of the DPS family, and Trooper Nipper’s service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

Nipper is the 220th DPS officer to die in the line of duty since 1823.
