Killeen ISD said a second grader was found with a loaded handgun in his backpack at Maxdale Elementary School on Thursday.
Killeen ISD police were at the school when the 9-year-old student arrived and were able to confiscate the weapon. Administrators learned from classmates that the student had brought the gun to school the previous day and alerted Killeen ISD police.
The Killeen Police Department is investigating the incident.
No one was injured.
"Maxdale Elementary is dedicated to ensuring student safety and is encouraging parents to urge students to immediately report any incident that might create a safety concern," Killeen ISD officials said.
Last week, a substitute teacher was fired from the same school after the teacher put duct tape on the mouths of students.
