WACO, TX (KXXV) -

Even the strongest soldiers can't pass up a hug from their little girl.

Army Sgt. Joshua Rosales has been in Kuwait for nearly 9 months. It was a long deployment that was hard on his family, especially his 9-year-old stepdaughter Aiyanah Jimenez.

"Ever since, maybe my second month out there, she's already wanting me to come home," said Rosales.

Rather than simply reuniting with Aiyanah, he decided to surprise her during an assembly at Crestview Elementary School.

"It felt good. She came crying to me and I just held her. I missed her. It felt great to be home again with my family, kids," said Rosales.

Aiyanah was shocked to see her stepfather appear right before her eyes. The surprise left her nearly speechless.

"Happy and excited and a little sad, with tears of joy," said Aiyanah.

"Just seeing her, it just shows their bond, their connection they have," said Amanda Contreras, Aiyanah's mother.

Rosales has been in the Army for 8 years, selflessly choosing to protect our country while creating a better life for his children.

"Doing it for my kids basically, trying to pave the way for them growing up so sometimes you've got to do sacrifices for them," said Rosales.

"I just want to be like him," said Aiyanah.

Rosales is now home for good and eager to catch up on the hugs that are long overdue.

"It was hard," said Rosales. "A lot of stuff happens and time don't wait for nobody."

"Good to have him back," said Aiyanah.

The whole family is now getting ready for a trip to Disneyland.
