DPS releases identities of two 19-year-olds killed in head-on collision

Two people are dead after a crash in Freestone County. 

DPS identified the two men as 19-year-olds Tyler Spillman and Bryce Cook. Both men were students and played football for Trinity Valley Community College in Athens. 

"We are saddened by the news that Cardinal football players Bryce Cook and Tyler Spillman have passed away," Trinity Valley Community College said. "Their leadership on our football team and overall presence on our campus will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bryce’s and Tyler’s families, friends and teammates during this difficult time."

Texas Department of Public Safety said the accident happened on FM 488 at 3:45 a.m. Monday. 

A gasoline tanker was traveling south on FM 488 when a vehicle struck the tanker head-on. The car and tanker cab burst into flames. 

The driver of the tanker, 56, was taken to the Navarro County Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The driver and passenger of the car died at the scene. 

The crash is still under investigation and the identities of the passengers are unknown at this time.
