Three people have died after a car driving on the wrong side of the road caused a multi-vehicle crash on I-45 in Navarro County, DPS said Thursday.

The crash happened near mile marker 234, in Corsicana.

At 9:01 p.m., DPS troopers were called to a five-vehicle crash on the northbound side. At least six people were trapped in their vehicles.

DPS said a Ford Explorer was traveling south on the northbound side and struck a Nissan Rogue head-on. A silver Toyota Avalon then hit the Nissan from behind. A blue Lexus LX470 and a white Toyota Highlander sustained minor damage while attempting to avoid the wreck.

The driver of the Ford was taken to Methodist Hospital in Dallas and the front passenger was taken to Baylor Hospital in Dallas, both via air ambulance and with serious injuries.

The driver and front passenger of the Nissan were taken to Navarro Regional Hospital where they were pronounced dead. The left rear passenger of the Nissan was pronounced dead on scene.

The Toyota Avalon driver was taken to the same hospital with possible injuries while the Lexus and Toyota Avalon occupants were not injured.

I-45 was closed for hours but the scene has now been cleared.

The incident is still under investigation.
