A resource center at Child Protective Services in McLennan County is accepting donations that will benefit children who are victims of abuse or neglect.

The Rainbow Room accepts new donated items, such as diapers, clothing and school supplies.

According to a CPS Conservatorship Child Specialist Katie Mitchell, it benefits children and families when they are removed from their homes. In some cases, children are removed quickly and don’t have anything but their clothes in their bag.

When that happens, CPS workers go to the Rainbow Room to get items for them.

“I love seeing the kids’ faces light up when they receive the new items and their faces are just so happy. They enjoy getting new items. It's like Christmas for them,” Mitchell said.

According to Community Council VP for the Junior League of Waco Milet Hopping, the organization has partnered with CPS for 19 years.

She said the Junior League holds fundraisers to help stock the room, which serves about 1,200 children per year.

The items needed include clothes, school supplies, diapers and more.

"We are always in need of things like car seats, Pack 'n' Play. Anything that makes the transition from the previous household to the new one. Something that can be less stressful to a child is to have things they know they are going to need," Hopping said.
