Highlassies’ Mitchell snags another honor

McLennan Community College women's basketball star Velma Mitchell has been named the women’s junior college Player of the Year by the Texas Basketball Coaches Association. Mitchell, a freshman from Rockdale, averaged 17.0 points per game to lead the Highlassies and was the best in the conference. She earned the North Texas Junior College Athletics Conference (NTJCAC) Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year awards and was a first-team all-conference and an all-region selection. She was named a 2017 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Junior/Community College Coaches’ All-American and an NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American.
