Three Copperas Cove High School seniors competed this week at the National History Day competition in College Park, MD.

Christopher Armstrong and Emma Bodish, both returning to the competition, and Noah Luna are all ranked in the top three of their graduating class of 2018.

The Forgotten Manongs: The Delano Grape Strike of 1965, the group’s documentary project, follows the story often forgotten the story of the real leaders of the strike. While Cesar Chavez is often credited with leading the strike, it was the Filipinos who helped the laborers' voices be heard.

The students prepared their project by conducting interviews including the son of one of the organizers, John Armington, as well as Cesar Chavez’s speech writer.

”This project allowed us to learn about a historical topic as well as develop skills that we can use in college and beyond,” Luna said.

The students placed second in the documentary presentation room and will not be advancing to the finals. The three historians have already begun planning for next year’s competition.
