The National Association of Student Personnel Administrators has awarded Texas A&M University the 2017 Bronze Excellence Award for its “Step In. Stand Up.” sexual assault awareness campaign and educational efforts around campus.

NASPA works for the advancement, health and sustainability of the student affairs profession for 15,000 members across more than 25 countries.

The campaign asks supporters to “step in” as active bystanders to prevent incidences for occurring and to “stand up” to support survivors. The campaign is a greater effort to create public awareness of sexual violence, engage the university community in dialogue and provide support for those affected. Student leaders and university representatives across campus collaborated to develop the campaign.

“Bringing the issue home to the Texas A&M campus and weaving with our community expectations and core values was important to the various focus groups,” Dr. Cynthia Hernandez, associate vice president for student affairs. “The power for this campaign that enables it to succeed at a university with about 65,000 students is a commitment by all to shoulder the responsibility of creating a change in culture.”
