The Waco ISD Board of Trustees voted to hire the sole finalist for the district's superintendent.
The board voted 7-0 for Dr. A. Marcus Nelson from Laredo ISD. Marcus was Texas Superintendent of the Year in 2014.
Waco ISD Spokesman Bruce Gietzen said they named Dr. A. Marcus Nelson as their choice after interviewing six candidates in person and getting nearly 60 applications. Nelson will take over for Superintendent Dr. Bonny Cain who announced her retirement in November.
The district had to wait 21 days to officially hire Nelson.
"I consider the Waco community one of the premier locations in our state," said Nelson in a statement. "I am committed to continuing the transformative work already underway in Waco Public Schools."
Nelson is expected to finish the school year in Laredo and replace Cain in early June.
