The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s golf team put itself in striking distance on the opening day, but the Cru will have some ground to make up on Tuesday after the first round of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Monday in Corinth. UMHB is in second place in the team standings halfway through the tournament.

The Cru women fired a 313 opening round total and are 11 shots behind the pace set by tournament leader U.T. Tyler at 302. Hardin-Simmons is in third place after posting a 318, Concordia Texas carded a 335 for fourth place and U.C.-Santa Cruz rounds out the top five with a 364 team score. There is a nine-team field competing for the ASC title this week.

Tori Gatling fired the low individual round for the UMHB women. Gatling carded a 76 for fifth place individually. McKenna Ralston is tied for sixth place after recording a 77, Olivia Robinson shot 79 for a share of ninth place, Cassidy Rawls posted an 81 to tie for 11th place and Emily Ming shot 84 for the Cru to hold down 18th place. Carly Pachuta of Hardin-Simmons has the individual lead after shooting 73 on Monday. Pachuta is one stroke ahead of U.T. Tyler’s duo of Amy Cox and Morgan Loth, who both fired 74’s in the opening round.

The two-day, 36-hole event is being played on a par-72, 5,881-yard layout at Oakmont Country Club in Corinth. Teams will tee off for Tuesday’s final round with an 8:30 AM shotgun start and the awards ceremony will follow the completion of the round. The ASC Tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf National Championships.
