TEMPLE, TX (KXXV) -

The City of Temple is offering up to $5,000 for citizens who are living in homes detrimental to the homeowner's health and/or safety.

"After waiting so long and then finally, it's here. You know, it's like Christmas," Temple homeowner Steven Shaw said.

So what is Steven Shaw comparing to Christmas?

"You wait and know Christmas is coming, but when it gets here the excitement hits you," Shaw added.

Temple's Home Improvement Plan.

"I was excited to hear that the program was now available to apply for," Shaw said.

So, the homeowner applied right away.

"I was one of the first ones there to apply to make sure I got in on time," Shaw added.

Through the program, the city offers homeowners with low to moderate income up to $5,000 to make repairs to fix code, health or disability problems.

"This is what we call a minor repair program," Community Development Manager for the City of Temple Larry Everett said.

Everett said to get part of the $200,000 designated for the minor work, you don't have to do anything major, just apply.

"But, it's based on first-come, first-served basis. And those that come and completely the application early, they'll have first choice in terms of receiving the funding and receiving the benefits of it," Everett added.

Shaw said he can't believe he gets to reap those benefits.

"It's action now. A lot of times, it's just talk," Shaw said.

It really is Christmas come early.

"When you see action coming into focus and taking place, then you can't help but to feel wonderful about what's going on. You know help is on the way," Shaw added.

This offer is the city's way of solving code violations and helping out their citizens in need.

Improvements that fall under the city's Housing Improvement Plan are:

  • Plumbing
  • Sewer leaks
  • Electrical systems
  • Furnace/ heaters
  • Water heaters
  • Exterior doors
  • Roofs
  • Floors
  • Rotted wood
  • Broken windows

Repairs associated with the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA, that fall under the city's offer are handicap ramps, handrails, grab bars, bathroom modifications and door altercations.

The deadline for low-to-moderate income homeowners in Temple to apply for the Home Improvement Plan is March 31st. Applications can be picked up at the Historic Post Office at 101 N. Main St. in downtown Temple.
