The Texas Department of Public Safety said that the Normangee police chief has been arrested and charged with deadly conduct and evading arrest in a motor vehicle.

DPS said they were called to assist the Leon County Sheriff’s Office with a deadly conduct investigation.

The family of the police chief, Charles Herford, called police, and said they were concerned for their safety.

Law enforcement said they found Herford’s vehicle and attempted to pull him over, but he refused. Herford evaded law enforcement and drove to his home.

He refused to come out when law enforcement made contact with him.

After several hours of negotiation, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Texas Rangers convinced Herford to leave his home.

Around 7 a.m., Herford turned himself into authorities and was taken to the Leon County Jail.

Officials said this is an ongoing investigation.
