Shankle Selected Big 12 Co-Player of the Week

WACO, TX (KXXV) -

Senior Blair Shankle was named Big 12 Co-Player of the Week after guiding the Lady Bears to a win over No. 32 USC, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon. It is the second weekly conference honor for Shankle this season (Feb. 7) and the fifth of her career.

Playing in the No. 1 singles position for Baylor on one of the biggest stages at the BNP Paribas Collegiate Challenge, then-ranked No. 18 Shankle posted a dominant win over No. 25 Gabby Smith, 6-0, 6-1. Her win helped the Lady Bears earn a 4-1 comeback victory and move to 4-3 against ranked opponents this season.

Shankle is 8-1 in the dual match season, playing her way to a 4-3 singles record against ranked foes. She currently riding a three-match win streak.

For her efforts on the court in the last few weeks, Shankle’s individual ranking jumped from No. 18 to No. 4 nationally. She is tied for the highest singles ranking in Baylor women’s tennis history with Zuzana Zemenova.

The No. 15 Lady Bears resume play against No. 20 Texas A&M on Wednesday, March 22, at Hurd Tennis Center. First serve is set for 5 p.m. (CT).
