Police identify two men arrested in College Station after officer involved shooting

COLLEGE STATION, TX (KXXV) -

Two suspects are now in police custody after a traffic stop in College Station escalated into gunfire.

According to the Department Public Safety, the gunfire broke out around 12:30 a.m. after a trooper pulled over the suspect's vehicle on southbound Highway 6 near the Academy store.

The driver, 35-year-old Michael Dewayne Lott, surrendered at the scene and is charged with felony possession of a controlled substance

The passenger, 32-year-old Charles Wayne Nelson, is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and felon in possession of a firearm.

Nelson was arrested with the help of a DPS helicopter just before 4 a.m. after he fled the scene and crashed a short distance later.

College Station Police supported DPS in the search.

An investigation is being conducted by the Texas Highway Patrol with the assistance of the Texas Rangers.
