Van Zyl Selected Big 12 Player of the Week

Junior Theresa Van Zyl earned her first career Big 12 Player of the Week award on Wednesday, March 8, after helping Baylor women’s tennis to a 3-1 record last week. She went 4-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles action, competing in four dual matches in a six-day stretch.

Van Zyl clinched team victories twice in the same day with No. 3 singles wins against Victoria Kareh of Incarnate Word, 6-1, 6-0, and Adriana Rajkovic of Old Dominion, 6-2, 6-2. On the season, she has earned the match-winner in six of Baylor’s 10 wins.

The Aroab, Namibia, native battled for a three-set, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, victory against Alaina Miller at No. 4 singles to help the Lady Bears to their second ranked win of the season against No. 21 UCLA, 4-3. With the win, Baylor remains perfect at home, 9-0, and is 2-2 against ranked opponents.

Van Zyl earned her fourth singles win of the week in two sets, 6-2, 6-2, over Mahitha Dadireddy of Tulsa at No. 4 singles. Her efforts helped Baylor stay in the match, which was decided at No. 5 singles.

Paired with sophomore Elizabeth Profit, the doubles duo went 2-1 at the No. 1 doubles position. The Lady Bears defeated Matea Zemunik and Rachel Saiq of Incarnate Word, 6-1, and Ksenia Lasutova and Dadireddy of Tulsa, 6-3. The pair’s lone loss came against Terri Fleming and Jada Hard, who recorded a 6-2 win for the Bruins. Against Old Dominion, Van Zyl and Profit’s doubles match went unfinished, 4-3.

Van Zyl is the second Lady Bear to earn Big 12 Player of the Week accolades from the conference, as senior Blair Shankle picked up the first honor of the season and fourth of her career honor on Feb. 7.

No. 10 Baylor enters Big 12 Conference play this weekend with a 10-3 record overall. First serve of the conference season is set for 5 p.m. (CT) at Oklahoma State on March 9 and continues for the Lady Bears at 5 p.m. at Oklahoma on March 10.
