The Texas Department of Public Safety will be cracking down on drunk driving this holiday season.

DPS and local law enforcement will be conducting traffic patrols to help make holiday traveling safer.

The extra patrols are expected throughout the holiday weekends of Dec. 23 - 26 and Dec. 31 - Jan. 1.

During last year's holiday enforcement period, DPS made 466 driving while intoxicated arrests, over 9,000 speeding citations, over 800 seat belt citations, over 300 fugitive arrests, and over 200 felony arrests.

"Impaired driving or reckless behavior on the road can turn holiday celebrations into tragedies, and these DPS patrols are designed to help save lives by identifying drivers who disregard the law and endanger others," said DPS Director Steven McCraw.
