Dozens of volunteers joined together to get Thanksgiving meals ready for the community Thursday morning.

Over 500 meals were delivered to elderly across Waco who either didn't have family with them for the holiday or couldn't prepare a meal themselves.

Meals were provided and packaged by the Waco Scottish Rites.

Meals and Wheels, an organization that delivers meals during the week, teamed up with Waco Scottish Rite to pass out the Thanksgiving meals. Volunteers delivered the meals within the community on Thursday morning at 9 a.m.

"It's so much more than a meal because seeing a friendly face and knowing a group of people care about you and that we value their lives and their contribution," Laura Ziemer, Director of Client Services at Meals and Wheels Waco. "We want to meet their basic need of food but we also want to give them the benefit of friendship and you know, a friendly smile."

The University High School soccer teams volunteered to deliver meals this year.
