The holiday shopping season kicks off in a few days with big-box stores celebrating Black Friday, but small businesses have a special shopping day of their own, and it's called Small Business Saturday.

American Express started the Small Business Saturday initiative in 2010. The company says 95 million people shopped with small businesses on the day last year.

Julina Macy with the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce said the sales event is good for both small businesses and everyone else.

"Small business Saturday occurs every year on the Saturday after thanksgiving," Macy said. "Small business help contribute to the local economy -- they drive it, they create jobs, and support the local tax base."

Small businesses all over Central Texas are gearing up for the sales day, and The Findery in Waco is getting ready to have their very first Small Business Saturday sale.

Store manager and vendor Alison Sorley said The Findery did not participate in Small Business Saturday last year because the store was new to the area, but she said they're ready this year.

"We're the hometown store. Everything that you come in and experience is going to be special and unique," Sorley said. "We've got budgets from $4 to $3,200."

Sorley said The Findery has some good deals in store for Small Business Saturday Shoppers.

"We're going to have the 25% off botanical print arm chairs and ottomans... we're going to have 30% off bird prints," she said. "Then we have these really unique antiques ceiling tiles that you can use as place mats, you can hang decoratively, and those are gong to be on sale as well...and then for the stocking stuffer items it's buy one get one half off," she added.

Sorley said The Findery also plans on opening their warehouse for Small Business Saturday.

Sheila Wilson is a shopper who said she's considering going to the Saturday sale.

"I just recently discovered the Findery and I have visited two times this week," Wilson said. "I am the shopper of our group so I'm probably very likely to come in on Saturday."
