Highlassies hold off Coastal Bend to snap losing streak

The McLennan Highlassies snapped their losing streak with a 61-51 victory over the Coastal Bend Cougars this afternoon in Beeville.

McLennan dominated in the first quarter, opening the game on an 11-0 run. The Highlassies held the Cougars to just two free throws in the period and led 14-2 heading into the second quarter. Coastal Bend drained back-to-back 3 pointers to open the second quarter, cutting the lead to six, 14-8 with 9:15 to play in the half. McLennan took control again, holding the Cougars to three free throws down the stretch to extend the lead to 15 at the break, 26-11.

The Highlassies led by as many as 17 in the third quarter. Coastal Bend began to rally and trimmed the lead to 10, 43-33, heading into the final 10 minutes of the game. The Cougars' momentum continued into the fourth quarter as they cut the lead to five, 52-47, with 5:29 to play. McLennan responded with a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Velma Mitchell led the Highlassies with 21 points and Patrickia Daily added 16.
