Waco ISD Superintendent Dr. Bonny Cain will retire at the end of the school year.
Cain, who has worked for the district for six years, made the announcement Thursday at the Board of Trustees meeting.
According to a press release, she told the board she had been thinking about the decision since March, but wanted to "steer the district through the ongoing, difficult and complex University High investigation before announcing her plans."
Cain and Board President Pat Atkins both said her decision to retire is not related to the University High School investigation at all.
Cain said she plans to lead the district until her replacement is found.
She said she will move back to the Tyler area to be with family.
She has worked in education for 40 years.
