Baylor senior Blair Shankle’s upset of No. 2 seeded Ena Shibahara of UCLA highlighted day two of the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Championship at Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The 54th-ranked player bested the second-ranked player among newcomers and freshmen in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

Shankle’s run came to a close in quarterfinals, where she was defeated by the tournament’s No. 5 seed Astra Sharma. The Dallas, Texas, native fell, 6-2, 6-4, to the 19th-ranked player out of Vanderbilt.

In consolation doubles, Shankle and sophomore Elizabeth Profit topped Pepperdine’s duo of Luisa Stefani and Apichaya Runglerdkriankrai in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. TOP QUOTES
“It was tough, (Ena Stefani) is an unbelievable player and is having an incredible fall. I’m not going to say it is just like any other match, but I pretty much prepared the same way. I warmed up the same way and had the same mindset, except I wanted to be a little bit more aggressive today.” – Senior Blair Shankle

“I think my serve (helped me), just going after it and staying confident with it. Then I tried to not give her too many opportunities to be aggressive, so when I had my chances to be aggressive I took them and when I didn’t I just tried to play defense.” – Senior Blair Shankle
WHAT'S NEXT
Senior Blair Shankle and sophomore Elizabeth Profit play the No. 3 seed Cal team of Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr in consolation doubles semifinals. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m. (CT) on Saturday.
