UMHB men's golf leads Abilene Intercollegiate

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s golf team kept up its hot play as the Cru stormed out to the opening round lead at the Abilene Intercollegiate Monday in Abilene. The UMHB men posted their fourth consecutive round of even par or better to take that tournament lead.

The Cru fired an ever-par team round of 284 to build an eight-stroke lead over Concordia Texas (292). Southwestern University and LeTourneau University are tied for third place with 301 totals. Texas Lutheran holds down the fifth spot with a 305. Tournament host Hardin-Simmons University shot 310 for sixth place, Howard Payne University is seventh with a 316 and Centenary College shot 328 to round out the eight-team field.

UMHB’s Alden Fortner has the individual lead after firing a two-under 69 on Monday. Fortner is one shot ahead of Concordia’s Sager Howell. Jarrod Brown and Reese Chance are tied for third place after both players carded opening round 71’s. Mats Heien is tied for sixth place with a 73 and Zach Daroowala posted a 77 and is tied for 22nd place.

The two-day, 36-hole event is being played on a par-71, 6,977-yard layout at Diamondback Golf Course in Abilene. Teams will tee off for Tuesday’s final round with an 8:30 AM shotgun start.

The Cru had two First Team selections, three Second Team picks and one Third Team honoree.
