Shankle Goes 3-0 in Day 1 of Oracle/ITA Masters

WACO, TX (KXXV) -

Senior Blair Shankle advanced in women’s singles with a straight set victory in the opening round of the Oracle/ITA Masters event Thursday. The 54th-ranked Lady Bear bested Lucile Pothier of Abilene Christian, 7-5, 6-3.

“Overall the day went well, I won all my matches, but I didn’t play as well as I wanted to against Lucile,” Shankle said. “I was able to play well enough on the midpoint to win the match. I can definitely improve on that and gain more experience through the tournament.”

Shankle, paired with Baylor men’s tennis player Max Tchoutakian, also saw success in mixed doubles. The duo began the day with a 6-0 win over Lidia Yanes Garcia of Austin Peay and Andrew Watson of Memphis to advance to the second round where they topped Pothier and Michael Feucht of Lamar, 6-4.

“It’s been a ton of fun,” Shankle said. “I really enjoy playing with Max. He has great energy and we have done really well together playing mixed doubles.”
