Baylor Volleyball’s Staiger Selected as AVCA National POTW

WACO, TX (KXXV) -

Baylor volleyball’s redshirt junior outside hitter Katie Staiger was picked as the Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association Player of the Week, announced Tuesday afternoon by the AVCA.

Staiger becomes just the second AVCA national player of the week selection in program history, the first since Tatiana Kenon earned the honor on Nov. 1, 1999.

The Plano, Texas native has maintained one of the nation’s highest offensive productions, currently sitting at second in total kills and third in kills/set, leading the Big 12 by wide margins in both categories.

In a week that saw the Baylor squad post a 3-0 effort, Staiger pounded in 64 kills and 5.82 kills/set, including 23 kills in Baylor’s sweep over No. 23 Kansas State.

Staiger’s 23 kills against KSU marked the first time since 2001 that a BU player has recorded 23 or more kills in a three-set match, additionally extending her 15-match streak of 13 or more kills.

Baylor’s four weekly honors, including the AVCA award for Staiger, matches the program’s record for a single-season, tying the 1999 squad. In that season, the Bears logged three Big 12 POTW nominations and the only other AVCA Player of the Week.

Staiger and the Bears are back in action on Wednesday, Sep. 28, in the Ferrell Center, hosting the Texas Tech Red Raiders. BU carries a Big 12-best nine-match win streak into the match.
