Baylor Men’s Golf Finishes 10th at Fighting Illini Invite

Baylor men’s golf carded 41-over-par 881 to finish in 10th place at the Fighting Illini Invitational. The Bears shot 12-over-par 292 in Sunday’s final round at Olympia Fields Country Club.

Senior Hunter Shattuck recorded his third consecutive round of 3-over-par 73 to finish tied for 29th place at 9-over 219. Sophomore Braden Bailey carded 2-over 72 in his final round to climb three spots into a tie for 33rd place at 10-over 220. Freshman Cooper Dossey shot 7-over 77 in his final round to finish tied for 36th place at 11-over 221. Sophomore Garrett May posted a 6-over 76 third-round score to finish tied for 54th at 17-over 227, and Matthew Perrine shot 1-over 71 in his final round to climb seven spots into 70th place at 22-over 232. Perrine’s final-round 71 equaled Dossey’s first round as the Bears’ best score of the tournament.

Illinois won the tournament at 5-over-par 845, followed by Oklahoma State (+18), Texas A&M (+24), North Carolina (+26) and Florida State (+27) rounding out the top five. UNLV (+28), Texas (+33), Southern California (+34) and Purdue (+34) also finished in front of Baylor (+41). The Bears placed ahead of Northwestern (+42), Arizona State (+42), Alabama (+43), Indiana (+45) and Army (+73).

Eight of 15 teams in the field were ranked in the preseason top 25 coaches poll. BU (+41) finished in front of two ranked opponents in No. 16 Alabama (+43) and No. 19 Arizona State (+42).

HIGHLIGHTS

Baylor finished fourth in par-3 scoring at 10-over 3.17.

Shattuck tied for second in the 78-player field with a 2-under 2.83 par-3 scoring average.

Dossey posted the teams’ best par-4 scoring average at 8-over 4.22, which tied for 30th in the field.

May had Baylor’s best par-5 scoring average at 1-under 4.83, which tied for 15th in the field.

Shattuck’s 38 pars tied for fifth-most in the tournament, while Bailey’s 37 pars tied for ninth.

Dossey led the team with seven birdies, which tied for 22nd-most in the field. Shattuck, Perrine, May and Bailey had five birdies apiece.

STAT OF THE DAY
6 – the number of players in the 78-golfer field to make birdie on the 187-yard, par-3 sixth hole on Sunday, one of which was BU sophomore Braden Bailey. There were only 16 birdies made on the hole in the 234 times it was played during the tournament.

The Bears will travel to Scottsdale, Ariz., to compete in the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, which runs Friday through Sunday at Mirabel Golf Club.
