Baylor Volleyball’s Staiger Takes Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week

WACO, TX (KXXV) -

Baylor volleyball redshirt junior outside hitter Katie Staiger was named the Big 12 Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, announced Monday afternoon by the conference office.

The Plano, Texas native has been one of the most prolific offensive threats in the country, ending the weekend at second in the country in kills, points, and attacks per set, third in total kills and points, and leading the conference in all of those categories.

In last week’s contests in Florida, Staiger continued to impress, notching 66 kills and five service aces, good for 6.00 kills/set.

In the five-set thriller with No. 13 Florida State, Staiger notched her fourth double-double of the season, tying a career-high with 28 kills and 11 digs, adding a service ace and three blocks.

Facing Little Rock on Saturday, Staiger had her most effective full match of the season, dropping in 22 kills on 42 attacks with just three errors, finishing with a .452 attack percentage, the highest by Staiger in a full match this season.

The weekly honor from the Big 12 is the first for a Baylor player this season and the first since Adrien Richburg won the defensive award on Nov. 9, 2015.

The last time a Baylor player won offensive player of the week was Oct. 10, 2011, when Briana Tolbert took home the top honor.

For Staiger, it is the first offensive award of her collegiate career and her second weekly award overall, after earning Big 12 Rookie of the Week on Sept. 29, 2014.

Staiger is joined in the weekly honors by Kansas’ Cassie Wait, earning Defensive Player of the Week, and Texas’ Micaya White, picking up Freshman of the Week. Both Wait and White took home their respective weekly awards for the second-straight week.
