Belton Independent School District's LaGay Pittenger was announced as a finalist for the 2017 Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year.
The fifth grade teacher at Lakewood Elementary School has been teaching for over 25 years.
She was chosen among 40 other educators in the area and is one of six finalists.
The district surprised her with the announcement at an assembly on Monday morning.
The winner will be announced in October.
