The cause of death of the man found on the banks near Lake Belton was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Temple Police Department investigated after a body was found near the banks of Lake Belton on Monday morning.

The man has been identified as 87-year-old Robert McClure of Belton.

Officers responded to the 600 block of Centex Sportsman Rd. in Temple after boaters saw what appeared to be a body near the area before 9:30 a.m. at Temple Lake Park.

The body was found lying at the base of a cliff near the water.

The call first came in as a cliff fall but officials said it is unknown if that is what happened.

"Our detectives are on scene and they're determine actually what happened," Temple Police Department spokeswoman Shawana Neely said.

Several agencies, including the Temple Fire Department, Morgan's Point and the Corps of Engineers responded and assisted recovering the body.

Justice of the Peace Ted Duffield pronounced McClure dead after 9:30 a.m. The body was sent to Dallas for an autopsy.

Police said the case is considered a death investigation.
