A new scam is targeting students trying to receive or pay back student loans.
According to Waco police, a victim applied for student loans due to the scammer knowing information, causing the victim to think it was a legitimate call.
The scammer discussed the victim’s federal student aid information and indicated that she should start paying them off with an iTunes card. The victim then purchased the card, providing personal credit card information.
The victim's account was compromised.
The victim contacted Apple support and was told to call police.
Detective Sergeant Tynes relayed that it is important for citizens to realize this is a newer way that scammers target victims for theft and fraud.
Police also advise citizens to be aware of any personal information given over the phone and over the internet.
