Four people were rescued safely Monday afternoon after their kayaks overturned on the Lampasas River near Elm Grove Road in Belton.

Bell County Sheriff's Department received a call at 11:45 a.m. Monday in reference to kayaks that overturned.

Lt. Donnie Adams said there were two kayaks with two people in each of them on the river. When the kayaks overturned, one person was able to get out of the river and run to a nearby house to get help.

When deputies arrived on scene, they found a second person on a log jam in the river. Firefighters were able to bring her to safety.

Officials were informed that two more people were still missing. A helicopter was called in to assist. The helicopter found the other two people on the banks.

Adams said crews had a difficult time with the rescue because the river was 50-60 feet below where the road was. Crews couldn't see the river from the top because the brush was so high.

All four people were rescued safely and are okay. Crews cleared the scene at 12:30 p.m.

Belton Fire, Salado Fire and the Bell County Sheriff's Department responded to the incident.
