Waco Police say a 13-year-old boy was hurt while playing with a round of live rifle ammunition.

Police were called to Providence Hospital at 8:45 p.m. Saturday night, in reference to a male with a gunshot wound to the head.

Police say the child and an older sibling were at their home in the 3100 block of MacArthur Drive. The 13-year-old victim was playing with a live rifle round, using a cigarette lighter to heat the round.

While holding the ammunition and heating it, the round exploded. The bullet and casing separated with the bullet penetrating the child’s forehead, lodging behind his eye.

The victim was transferred to McLane Children's Hospital in Temple. Waco police are still investigating the incident.
