An investigation is ongoing after an inmate died at the privately operated Jack Harwell Detention Center on Monday night.

Kristian Culver, 31, was found unresponsive in his cell at 6:38 p.m. and later pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace James E. Lee Jr. No other inmates were housed in the cell.

According to the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office, the cause of death appears to be suicide by asphyxia.

His body was sent to the Southwester Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas for an autopsy.

A death in custody investigation is ongoing. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards and the Sheriff’s Office said an investigation into the incident is standard procedure.

Three correctional officers at the Jack Harwell Detention Center, which is operated by La Salle Corrections, were arrested last year for falsifying headcount records the same day an inmate committed suicide.

A grand jury indicted Milton Walker, Michael Crittenden and Christopher David Simpson for tampering with a governmental record earlier this year.
