A 15-year-old girl from Crawford reported missing on Monday afternoon was found safe and unharmed before 8 p.m.

Volunteers with the McGregor Fire Department found Lea Nicole Jones walking on Canaan Church Road and Cedar Rock Parkway on Monday night.

Crawford EMS checked her out before she was transported to Providence Hospital for further evaluation.

According to authorities, Jones had gone to school at 6:30 a.m. but never arrived at school on Monday. Her father reported her as a runaway after she didn't return home from school at 3:45 p.m. and he didn't locate her in the area nearby.

Crawford Police Department Chief Clayton Bruton said missing persons cases are not common in the town.

"We may average one a year. Of course, one is too many. We thank everybody for their prayers and support. We're thankful she was found safe and sound," said Bruton.

Several departments assisted with the search, including McGregor Fire Department, Valley Mills Fire Department and Crawford Fire Department and EMS.
