Local high school student killed in crash identified

A local high school student was killed after crashing into a semi-truck on Saturday.

Belton ISD officials identified the 16-year-old student as Alexander "AJ" Howard. Howard was a sophomore at Belton High School and a member of the Marching 100 and the Marine Corps JROTC.

Temple police responded to the accident in the 10000 block of Highway 317 and FM 2483 at 3:45 p.m.

Officers determined a male driving a 2008 Hyundai was attempting to pass a vehicle in a no passing zone. He was hit by the trailer of an 18-wheeler.

Due to injuries sustained, the driver of the Hyundai was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The Temple Police Department Accident Reconstructionists were called to the scene to investigate.

In an email to parents, students and staff on Sunday, Belton High School Principal Chris duBois said, "His death is an incredible loss for our community, and I hope that you will join me in keeping his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers."

The school district will have counselors available to assist any student affecting by Howard's death.

The circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation.
