A Copperas Cove student riding his bike to S.C. Lee Junior High was hit by a vehicle Monday morning.

The vehicle that hit the student was a parent dropping their child off for school. The parent was pulling out of the bus loop, which is in direct violation of the Copperas Cove ISD policy.

The student hit was wearing a helmet and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

The responding officer said the boy's injuries appeared to be minor, but they're still waiting on an updated status from the hospital.

Police are working to determine if the child should have been riding his bike on the sidewalk.

Texas transportation code is vague and states that bicycles should be operated as a motor vehicle (i.e. ridden in the road). Local law enforcement typically yields to city ordinance/laws on the issue, but Copperas Cove doesn't have any ordinance that prohibits people from riding bikes on the sidewalk.

This comes after last week when a Copperas Cove High School student was tragically killed in a car accident while waiting for the bus.

After last week's accident and today's incident, the police department is also looking into raising awareness about bicycle and school zone safety.

This is a developing story. Stay with News Channel 25 for updates.
