One man is dead and another in police custody after an early morning argument ended in gunfire.

Charles H. Mitchell was arrested following a shooting around 1 a.m. Sunday morning on the 500 block of East Bell Avenue in Gholson. The victim identified as his son-in-law, 34-year-old Shawn Chudej.

According to McLennan County Sherrif's Office, the dispute began at a family gathering with the men arguing over land. Following the argument, Mitchell returned home, retrieved a shotgun and returned to the party.

Officials say Chudej was shot multiple times in the back as he tried to flee. McLennan County Sheriff, Parnell McNamara, described the incident as a "total family tragedy."

At the time of the shooting, there were 6 or 7 people at the scene including the victim's wife and a five-year-old girl who was not injured.

Mitchell is currently being held in McLennan County Jail on a $1.5 million dollar bond for one count of murder and one count of endangering a child.
